SHARKS WOULD GENERATE MORE MONEY AS TOURISM,THAN AS FOOD
The research, led by marine biologist Andres Cisneros-Montemayor , says: tourism around whale sharks currently generates about 314 million dollars for year and is projected to increase to $ 780 million in the next 20 years. Earnings from shark fishing in the world reach U.S. $ 630 million per year, but are on the decline.
Tourism attracts almost 600,000 people a year and provides 10,000 jobs in 29 countries, according to the research, which calls for greater protection of the species from Australia to the Caribbean, hunted mainly to meet the demand for fin soup shark in Asia.
"We hope that people recognize that sharks are not only valuable at the plate," said Cisneros-Montemayor
